Loving Money

Loving money, in the Bible, is the root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Loving money is not a good thing. The Bible speaks about how a person cannot love God and money at the same time. If one treasurers earthly things, that is where his heart is (Luke 12:34). Those who love money will not be satisfied by it as they can never have enough. Loving money can be a hindrance to hearing and following God’s Word (Matthew 13:22). Loving money and being greedy is often listed when Paul names sins that are to be avoided (1 Timothy 3:3, 2 Timothy 3:2).

Instead of loving money, the writers of the biblical books urge the readers to be content with what they have. This is also recorded as the words of Jesus as he speaks to soldiers who were known to lend their money in order to gain more: “Be content with your wages” (Luke 3:14). If one is content, they can handle being poor and they can handle being rich. The basis of this contentment is in the promises of God.

“He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” – Ecclesiastes 5:10

“He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.” – Matthew 13:22

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” – Luke 12:34

“No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” – Luke 16:13

“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” – Philippians 4:11-13

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” – 1 Timothy 6:10

“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” – Hebrews 13:5
