Biblically-Based Finances

The issue of money and finances is a big topic in the Bible. Even Jesus himself is recorded on several occasions to speak about money. One verse mentions that it is not man who earns money, but it God who gives it (Deuteronomy 8:17-18). It is seen as foolish to strive after money, as even the rich have to leave their wealth when they die. In the book of Proverbs is a record of someone asking God for neither poverty nor riches, so that they don’t dishonor God in either by theft or pride. The one who uses his money poorly is unlikely to be entrusted with heavenly gifts, according to the teachings of Jesus (Luke 16:11).

It is clear that in the opinion of the writers of the Bible that money was an important issue that religion can and does address.

“And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” – Deuteronomy 8:17-18

“For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.” – Psalm 49:10

“Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.” – Proverbs 30:8-9

“If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” – Luke 16:11
