Victim Statement

Definition

A victim statement is an extended fraud alert that a consumer may place on their credit report.

Analysis

When a consumer suspects fraud, they may place a fraud alert on their credit report. Following 90 days, if they have proof of fraudulent activity, they may forward that proof to the credit bureau to establish a victim statement on their credit report.

This victim statement will remain on their credit report for 7 years. The purpose is to include contact information that all potential creditors are required to use in order to gain approval for any credit request using that consumer’s social security number.

Consumers may list up to 2 telephone numbers within the victim statement. Consumers that have a victim statement may also update it, such as if their telephone number changes.
