TransUnion

Definition

TransUnion is a consumer credit reporting agency (CRA) and is one of the three major credit bureaus operating in the United States.  Like the other major credit bureaus, TransUnion provides credit reports and scores to consumers and businesses, and is governed by both the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act.

Analysis

As a credit bureau, TransUnion provides credit reports and scores to businesses and directly to consumers.  TransUnion is emphasizing a subscription model in which consumers receive a free 30 day trial which includes credit report monitoring and unlimited access to your credit score and report.  The service, which is offered through TransUnion’s TrueCredit.com website, is free for 30 days and $11.95 a month thereafter.  TransUnion also offers a 3-in-1 credit report with a TransUnion credit score.  The TransUnion credit score (also referred to as the TrueCredit or TransRisk score) is not the FICO score, and is not the score used by most lenders.  TransUnion also offers a FICO based score and credit report to consumers, as well.

TransUnion also offers its EMPIRICA score and the VantageScore products to businesses and lenders for the purpose of evaluating consumer credit worthiness.
