Definition
A credit report number is an identifier on a consumer credit report that confirms the consumer’s identity as well as the request date for a report.
Analysis
A report number normally consists of a simple multi-digit number that is printed near the top of the report. The purpose is to confirm to the credit bureau that a consumer is looking at a recent copy of a credit report.
In order to dispute information on a credit report, the credit bureau may require that a recent credit report is ordered. Credit bureaus define recent as within the last 30 days. A free credit report may be used, or a consumer may purchase a credit report from the credit bureau.
