2009 National Secure Your ID Day
April 9th, 2009 by Kenneth Long
The 2009 National Secure Your ID Day will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009 in communities nationwide. Each event is hosted by the Better Business Bureau and is made possible by The National Association for Information Destruction (NAID).
What is Provided
Consumers may shred up to three boxes or bags of paper documents for free. Your private documents will be shredded on the spot.
The BBB is hosting this event in order to help consumers safely destroy sensitive documents with private information that could be used by criminals engaging in identity theft. While certain documents should be stored safely for future reference, other documents such as old credit card statements might be better handled by destroying them.
In addition, BBB representatives will be on hand to answer questions related to identity theft and distribute information on how to protect yourself from becoming a victim. They may be able to refer you to a member organization that helps victims recover from identity theft.

Also, the web site FileStoreShred.com maintains a list of free paper shredding and electronics recycling events (including BBB) from coast to coast across the U.S.A. and Canada. Scores of organizations sponsor community shredding services that are free to the public. For most people, these events are faster and easier than trying to dispose of this stuff at home.
